A thank-you letter from RI Director Sir George Porter to the British Museum, sent after the Lectures.

The haunting calls of another lemur species echo around the Lecture Theatre, as Attenborough considers how animals use language to defend territories. It’s an indri, the largest living lemur species. He used this recording to help film lemurs in the dense forests of eastern Madagascar. On the screen the audience sees nothing but trees until eventually a large, black and white animal appears clinging to a tree, like a giant teddy bear. ‘He seemed to be fascinated by this recording,’ Attenborough says. ‘I suspect that he had never imagined that another rather tinny indri could have invaded his territory.’ The indri calls back with a loud honking noise. Attenborough explains the meanings of the two territorial calls. ‘The first was that wailing call that I played which says, “This is my land, this is my territory.”’ The honking sound says ‘Get out!’ to an intruder.
